I don't see Conservatives being all that upset if he doesn't resolve it. Especially since many Conservatives don't believe we should be involved in the conflict at all. He might deject a portion of his base with recent moves to send arms to Ukraine, but we've seen how many ardent supporters of his (even if they're anti-interventionist) will ultimately fall in line.

For the broader public, probably antagonism if Russia is able to cede more ground in Ukraine, with a worse case being the taking of most Ukranian territories. A long term affect of this would likely be him considered as a pivotal reason in why momentum for Ukraine ultimately failed. However, I do think Biden will/should also carry some blame in the slow-walking of munitions to Ukraine as well.

The Russian economy is garbage and fueled entirely by massive amounts of military spending with money that doesn't exist all to fuel a 1,239 day war that was expected to only take 3 days. Of course Putin "outlasted" 4 US presidents, he's a dictator and they were elected presidents. He's certainly not the strategic genius that a lot of people once thought he was.

Trump's ultimatum won't have any impact because we've already sanctioned Russia about as much as we can sanction them. The only remaining course of action on this front is to go after the few remaining buyers of Russian oil, namely India, China and Turkey. Mostly India though and there are numerous valid reasons we haven't gone after India before this so we shall see if Trump actually does it or not. Doing so would speed up the crumbling of Russia's economy but its not going to force Putin to negotiate in good faith.

Putin needs his victory in Ukraine because the only thing Putin cares about is Putin and his legacy. Trump's base will forget all about his Ukraine promises just like they are currently trying to forget all about Epstein and his files which Trump promised to release

I think if push came to shove his base would put all the blame on Europe. I fully expect it to come to a close over the next year or two, and think it would require a large escalation to still be going on by the end of the term.

If there is a large escalation it is really hard to make predictions without knowing the reason for escalation. Obviously if Russia attacked Poland, we would have larger things to worry about than simply bringing it to a close.

The part I can’t figure out is what a conclusion will look like without escalation. Will Ukraine concede large swaths of land? will there be alliance repercussions? will sanctions remain in place? will Putin have any problems remaining in power? Idk.

If there is any resolution they will count it as a win, be loud about it, and claim "Trump ended Biden's war" even if the resolution is just rolling over and giving Russia whatever it wants. If there is no resolution or an escalation his base will claim it was inevitable and probably "Biden's fault for getting us into this to begin with". If you're still with Trump at this point, I don't expect consistency from you and expect your principles to change to suit the current Trumpist narrative. They'll go where they are led, even if it means contradicting previous statements or suddenly dropping principles they claimed to care about.

The only way he will stop it is to basically give Russia what it wants and try to frame it as a win for himself. He doesn't seem likely to do that at the moment due to the ultimatum, but I think it is the most likely outcome. I'll give it a month before Trump starts warming up to Russia again because Trump is not particularly consistent and has shown favorability to Putin more than this current "hardball" tactic. I suspect the favorability is more enduring than the "hardball". If Trump doesn't just roll over to Russia on the matter, I expect for it to continue to drag on in a way akin to America's attempts as nation building in the middle east or occupation of Vietnam. The Ukranians won't be giving up even if they end up occupied by Russia, so even after "victory" it will be hard to hold it. Even then, that victory certainly isn't assured (Europe broadly has started to rev up their militaries again). 

I won't be surprised if it escalates either. Trump is sort of doing his own version of Nixon's "Madman Theory" of foreign policy, just with tariffs and threats of bombing stuff. He issues ultimatums, and it's never clear whether he will back off on them or double down. He has done both. Which he will do in this case is uncertain, but I am leaning towards him bluffing and backing down and rolling over to Russia simply because he seems to favor Russia quite a bit.

 My magic crystal ball is having wifi issues, so predictions are never certain, but that's my take on the matter.

I think Trump has a genuine desire for a cessation to the conflict. The '50 days' suggests that he knows it won't happen quickly, much less immediately. 

It also gives Trump time to forward US weapons to Europe -- which ostensibly is so Europeans can pay for the weapons, though it also *symbolically distances* Trump from the very weapons that will be used to hit Russian targets.

To answer the main question, I presume there will be a modicum of political fallout, though probably not enough to impede other aspects of Trump's agenda.

Where is the war headed? It seems to be a long slog -- typical of Russian ground wars. It has accelerated the adverse demographic decline in both countries. It has converted the economies of both countries into wartime economies. 

I presume there will be an eventual cessation and possibly a DMZ. I think European defense will remain stronger generationally (whether under the flag of NATO or otherwise). Russia will likely suffer a regime 'transition' in some form -- though hopefully it can avoid a collapse scenario (a la Dec '91).

I would imagine they will attempt to cut off Russia’s oil export business and defund his ability to continue on.   This will destabilize the Russian economy and cause Putin all sorts of problems.

Since Putin can begin a ceasefire *today* by simply stopping the military campaign *today*, one can only surmise that Trump is trying to undermine growing frustration in the Republican caucus by driving a wedge between the hawks and the MAGA isolationists, or he believes he can choreograph a ceasefire after Russia has completed as much of a land grab as it can by the time that window is up.

These deadlines always have a habit of moving, of course, so it’s notable primarily insofar as he is giving Russia more time to end a war it started than he has given American trade partners and allies time to adapt to punishing tariffs being imposed for no comprehensible reason.
